U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team defeats Mexico in first game of 4-Nations Tournament in Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team defeated its counterparts from Mexico 3-0 in the first match of the 4-Nations International Tournament in Costa Rica as Mallory Pugh, Kaycie Tillman and Madison Haley scored for the USA.

U.S. head coach B.J. Snow brought a roster of 20 players to the first tournament competition for this group of players and the Americans will also face host Costa Rica on April 26 and finish the tournament with Japan on April 28.

The USA scored just eight minutes into the match when Mia Hoen-Beck got behind the Mexican defense on a through ball. She played the ball to Pugh on the left and she finished her one-on-one chance to make it 1-0.

The USA doubled its lead just three minutes later off a corner-kick. The ball was sent into a scramble in the middle of the box and Tillman was able to get possession before finding the net. Tillman also scored against the German U-17s during a 1-1 tie at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. at the end of January.

The young Americans sealed the match in the 80th minute with another goal off a corner kick as Haley got on the end of the service to score her first international goal at the U-17 level.

The trip will provide the young Americans with valuable experience and competition in the country that will host the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997, are age-eligible for that tournament.

In the other match of the competition, Japan defeated host Costa Rica 6-0.
