U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team to hold training camp at Olympic Training Center
The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team will come together for the first time since winning the 2012 CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship in Guatemala in mid-May as U.S. head coach Albertin Montoya has called up 26 players for a training camp being held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., from June 9-16.
Montoya named all 20 players that helped the USA win all five games at the Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament without allowing a goal, defeating Panama 7-0 in the semifinal to earn a berth to the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan and then downing Canada 1-0 in the championship game. Forward Amber Munerlyn scored the winning goal in the title game.
Those players also include forward Summer Green, who set a U.S. record for most goals in a single qualifying tournament by pounding in 12 over the five matches. Montoya has added six players to that group, almost all of whom have previous experience in training camps with the U.S. team.
The young Americans are scheduled for two domestic training camps (including this one) and one foreign trip before the third FIFA Women’s World Cup for U-17 women that will be held from Sept. 22-Oct. 13. U.S. U-17 WNT captain Morgan Andrews, a rising senior from Milford, N.H., was recently named the Gatorade Girls’ High School Soccer Player of the Year.
