U.S. U-17 Women’s Youth National Team claims second straight 3-1 win over Brazil

KENNESAW, Georgia – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s Youth National Team went down a goal in the 69th minute and then roared back, tying the game three minutes later through Angel City FC midfielder Kennedy Fuller before forward Mary Long scored twice to close out the game.

The victory was the second consecutive 3-1 win for the U.S. U-17s over fellow 2024 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier Brazil as the teams also played in Kennesaw outside of Atlanta on July 12.

The USA gave up the first goal off a set play as Giovanna headed home a free kick cross from Kaylane to put the South Americans ahead.

The USA put together a brilliant response when Fuller, who has seen significant minutes for ACFC during her rookie NWSL season, equalized three minutes later. Fuller headed home a cross from the right wing that was served by Jaiden Rodriguez, finishing low inside the far post.

The young Americans took the lead in the 84th minute courtesy of 67th minute substitute Mary Long. After a nice spell of possession inside the Brazilian defensive third, Fuller played a quick one-two at the top of the penalty area with defender Jocelyn Travers who then skinned a defender to make room for her shot from 20 yards, firing low toward the left corner. Brazilian goalkeeper Ana Moganti made the save, but couldn’t hold the ball, and Long raced in to bury the rebound for her first goal at the U-17 level.

Two minutes later, Long put the game on ice, running onto a perfect through ball from center back Jordyn Hardeman that took her into the right side of the penalty area. Long placed her shot across the ‘keeper and into the lower left corner from 16 yards out to complete her brace.

On June 22, the USA learned its World Cup path and will face Spain, Colombia and Korea Republic in Group B at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, taking place at two stadiums in the Dominican Republic from October 16-November 3. The USA opens against reigning champion Spain on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Félix Sánchez Stadium in Santo Domingo. The USA will then face 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup runners-up Colombia at Félix Sánchez Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 19 and finished group play against Korea Republic on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Cibao University Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros.
