U.S. U-19 Men’s Youth National Team closes June camp with 1-0 win over Uruguay

CIUDAD DE LA COSTA, Uruguay – The U.S. Under-19 Men’s Youth National Team finished its South American camp with a 1-0 win against Uruguay. Goalkeepers Adam Beaudry and Julian Eyestone combined for five saves to earn the clean sheet.

The USA got the game’s only goal in the 63rd minute after the Uruguay defense turned the ball over deep in the attacking area. Midfielder Niko Tsakiris took advantage and dribbled past two defenders down the left side of the box before sending a dangerous centering pass toward forward Keyrol Figueroa. Uruguay defender Nicolás Ramos attempted to clear the pass, but put it into the back of his own net.

The USA had to fend off a late Uruguay charge in stoppage time. The hosts were rewarded three straight corner kicks to end the match.

On the first, an attempted header deflected off a U.S. defender and went over the cross bar. On the second corner, the ball pinged out to Uruguay’s Nicolás Burgio near the right corner of the six-yard box, but his shot on frame was punched away by a diving Eyestone. On the third corner, Uruguay’s Paolo Calione headed the ball toward the ground, but Eyestone smothered the shot to end the match.

Beaudry had the game’s best save in the first half. In the eighth minute, Uruguay’s Renzo Machado broke free from his marker, rushed toward the box and sent a cross to teammate Agustín Albarracín. But Beaudry moved across his line and threw himself in front of the Uruguayan’s first-time effort to deny the opportunity.

The USA nearly took the lead in the 42nd minute. Marcos Zambrano had the ball at the top of the box, turned and fired a shot on frame and forcing the keeper to give up a rebound. Cruz Medina got to the ball and fired his own effort, but missed just wide right.

This was the USA’s final preparation prior to this summer’s Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Guanajuato, Mexico, which will serve as qualifying for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
