U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team defeats Sweden 3-1 on goals from Purce, Horan and Doniak

GAVLE, Sweden – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated their counterparts from Sweden, 3-1, on goals from forwards Margaret Purce, Lindsey Horan and Makenzy Doniak in the first of two friendlies matches in Sweden.

The game marked the first international victory for U.S. head coach Michelle French, whose squad will face the Sweden Under-23 Women’s National Team on June 2.

These U-20 squads drew 0-0 in early March at the 12-Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain.

The USA got an early goal from the Harvard-bound Purce, who tallied in the 13th minute from 12 yards out off an assist from midfielder Rose Lavelle.

Horan, the only professional player on the roster, who recently completed a 16-goal campaign with Paris Saint-Germain in France, doubled the lead in the 59 th minute, heading home a corner kick from Lavelle.

University of Virginia striker Makenzy Doniak sealed the match in the 71st minute, scoring off an assist from Horan. Sweden’s Jessica Thorin added a consolation goal in the 87th minute.

The USA is in preparations for qualifying for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Canada. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for that tournament.
