U.S. Women’s National Team to face Costa Rica on Sept. 1 in Rochester, N.Y., on NBC

The U.S. Women’s National Team will face Costa Rica in its first post-London Olympics international friendly on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. The match, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET, will be broadcast live on NBC.

The U.S.-Costa Rica matchup takes place in the hometown of star striker Abby Wambach, the second-leading scorer in the women’s game with 140 career international goals. She has scored twice in two matches so far at the 2012 London Olympics.

The USA qualified for the 2012 Olympic quarterfinal by virtue of a 3-0 victory against Colombia on Saturday, July 28, at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland. The squad is atop Group G with six points following the Colombia win and its Olympic-opening 4-2 victory against France on July 25.

The team wraps up the Group G stage against Korea DPR at 12:15 p.m. ET today at the famed Old Trafford in Manchester, England, the home of the English Premier League’s Manchester United. The match will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network and NBC’s specialty soccer channel.

Should the U.S. win Group G, it would face the third-place finisher of either Group E or Group F on Friday, Aug. 3, at St. James’ Park in Newcastle, England.

The USA’s first match after the 2004 Olympics also took place in Rochester, a 4-3 victory against Iceland on Sept. 25 at Frontier Field. Wambach dazzled her hometown fans with the game’s first two goals and assisted a Mia Hamm tally.
