UMass men’s soccer announces signing of five newcomers for 2021
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men’s soccer team announced the signings of five newcomers to the roster for the upcoming 2021 season. The group features three incoming freshman in addition to a pair of transfers.
Alex Geczy (Newtown Square, Pa.) comes to Amherst by way of Episcopal Academy, where he was a team captain and a 2021 All-Main Line First-Team selection as a goalkeeper. Geczy played club soccer with FC Delco and was named to the ECNL CSP Northeast All-Conference Team in 2020.
Chatham Headrick (Knoxville, Tenn.) joins the Minutemen after spending the last three seasons at the College of Charleston. As a junior, Headrick started all eight games and logged the second-most minutes on the team with 733 while scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Coastal Carolina. At Maryville High School, Headrick was tabbed the district player of the year and earned the all-state during his senior season and earned all-county, all-region and all-district honors both as a junior and senior after leading the team in scoring his final two seasons.
Drew Lovely (Weymouth, Mass.) started all 16 games as a junior at Merrimack College and earned a top-20 ranking in the NEC Conference. As a sophomore, Lovely appeared in 19 games with nine starts and scored a goal. In 2017 as a freshman, Lovely made nine starts and appeared in 17 games with two goals on his way to earning NE10 Third-Team All-Conference honors. The defender was a four-year letterwinner and two-time Bay State Conference All-Star at Weymouth High School. The team captain also earned an Eastern Mass All-Star and Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic honors as a senior.
Brad Moccio (Longmeadow, Mass.) was a four-year letterwinner at Longmeadow High School, where he helped the Lancers win the 2019 Massachusetts Division 1 State Championship. The centerback was tabbed first-team all-state and named to the New England Soccer Journal All-Region team in addition to earning all-Western Massachusetts honors in both soccer and basketball. Moccio also led NEFC West Elite to a 2019 Massachusetts State Cup Championship to earn a trip to the national championships in Chicago, Ill.
Andrew Ortiz (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned four letters at Longmeadow High School while scoring 19 goals to go along with 13 assists as a midfielder for the Lancers. The Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year also earned all-state and all-New England honors and helped guide Longmeadow to a Massachusetts Division 1 State Championship in 2019. Ortiz played club soccer for NEFC West.
