University of North Florida men’s soccer makes three additions to 2021 signing class

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.University of North Florida men’s soccer head coach Derek Marinatos announced the addition of three signees as they join five others as part of the 2021 class.

Santiago Fonseca and Colain Jean join the Ospreys from junior college at Daytona State, and Luto Tom is a Division I transfer from ETSU. This trio joins Owen Christensen, Joaquin Acuna, Adrian Maldonado, Chance Shamlou and Niklas Schaffner.

“The addition of these outstanding transfer recruits gives us more depth and more athleticism heading into Fall 2021,” said Marinatos.

Santiago Fonseca
Hometown: Bogota, Colombia
High School: Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary
Position: MF
Preview School: Daytona State

  • Previous to Daytona State, Santiago was a standout at St. Louis FC Developmental Academy and which finished third in the DA national playoffs
  • Over the past season and a half at Daytona State, amassed 10 goals and 12 assists
  • Was named an All-Region 8 First Team selection in 2019
  • Helped Daytona State to a No. 7 ranking in NJCAA

Marinatos says:
“Santi can play multiple positions – 7, 11, and 10. He is left-footed, can break lines on the dribble and play a final pass. He is also very dangerous with his service on all set pieces.”

Colain Jean
Hometown: Homestead, Fla.
High School: South Dade Skills Center
Position: D
Previous: Daytona State

  • Played two seasons with the Falcons in the back line, starting 23 games
  • Tallied one goal and three assists
  • Helped Daytona State record six shutouts in seven games this season
  • Helped Daytona State to a No. 7 ranking in NJCAA

Marinatos says:
“Colain has incredible pace as a right-sided defender or wing player. He is very competitive and an excellent 1v1 defender. He is also dangerous going forward and with his wide service.

Luto Tom
Hometown: Cape Town, South Africa
Height: 6-0
Position: MF
Previous School: Iowa Lakes CC / ETSU

  • Played one season with ETSU, playing in 10 games with six starts
  • Was an all-tournament first team, second team all-conference and all-region selection in 2019
  • As a freshman garnered first team all-conference, all-region and all-tournament honors
  • Earned All-Academic honors in both seasons at Iowa Lakes

Marinatos says:
“We look for Luto to make an immediate impact in our midfield as a box-to-box midfielder. He has a rare combination of size, strength and passing with an ability to break up attacks.”
