PHILADELPHIA (Via University of Pennsylvania) – Jonathan Delano has been named an assistant coach for the University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer program, as announced by first-year head coach Brian Gill. Delano joins Gill and second-year assistant Peter Lowry to lead the Quakers.

“I am very excited to be having Jon join us here at Penn,” said Gill. “In getting to know Jon over these past few years, I have grown to admire his hard working mentality, understanding of the game, and have been impressed with the development of the players he has had a chance to coach. I think he will complement our staff very well and will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes both on and off the field.”

Delano arrives to Penn after spending the past five seasons at Harvard, most recently in the role of associate head coach. His tenure featured the second-most Ivy League wins over the past five years in the history of Harvard soccer, and in 2015, Delano was named the NSCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

“First, I would like to thank Brian Gill for granting me the opportunity to become a part of the University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer program,” said Delano. “I am excited to start working with the coaching staff and the student-athletes to continue the strong soccer tradition that Rudy Fuller and past coaches have worked so hard to create. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the great coaches, staff members and student-athletes that I worked with at Harvard for the many special memories and experiences. I look forward to creating many great moments here at Penn.”

With the Crimson, Delano developed six professional players in four years including two MLS players, one second division player in Spain, two USL players, and one second division player in Australia, in addition to working with 2017 MLS SuperDraft pick, Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu. Delano oversaw 19 All-Ivy honorees in his five years with Harvard.

“Throughout his career, Jon has demonstrated that he is one of the best recruiters in college soccer and am looking forward to working alongside him and Coach Lowry to continue to strengthen the tradition here at Penn,” added Gill.

Prior to his stint in The Bay State, Delano boasted a successful career at Dominican University ini San Rafael, Calif. A 2003 graduate of the institution, Delano began is coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, along with coaching local high school and club-level teams. He was elevated to head coach of the Dominican women’s team in 2006 and garnered two California Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year awards.

As a result of his success with the women’s program, Delano was elevated to director of soccer in 2009, putting him in charge of both the men’s and women’s teams in their first year competing at the NCAA Division II level. Delano also had stints as the director of athletic development at Dominican, and the head men’s and women’s golf coach.

As a student-athlete himself at Dominican, Delano competed in both soccer and basketball. He was born in nearby Santa Rosa, Calif., and is married to the former Tobey Glazier, a former swimmer and water polo student-athlete at Bucknell.
