BOISE, Idaho — More than 210 teams, including two defending US Youth Soccer National Champions, kicked off the 2019 US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships Monday at the Simplot Sports Complex in Boise, Idaho.
Teams from all over the western United States took the field with the goal of taking the next step toward claiming the coveted US Youth Soccer National Championship in their respective age group.
The 2019 US Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships feature 210 of the top boys and girls teams from the 14 State Associations that make up the US Youth Soccer West Region, with each squad competing for the 2019 regional title. Preliminary games will be held June 17-19, with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals taking place June 21-23.
A few notes from Monday’s games:
13U Boys
In the 13U Boys age group, 3RSC B06 RCL Black (WA) got a big win over Billings United Pink (MT). Bryan Martinez started off the offensive effort for his team in the 8th minute as he sprinted past the defensive line to score. 3RSC B06 RCL Black would add three quick consecutive goals in the 20th, 25th and 27th minutes. Christopher Aquino would start off his hat trick performance in the 20th minute when scoring off a corner kick. After halftime, the 3RSC B06 RCL Black team would continue with their offensive effort with a goal shortly after kick off. Bryan Martinezand Alexander Martinez, would finish the game with two goals and Aquino with three goals.
14U Girls
On the 14U Girls side, Forza FC 05DN (UT) started off the competition with a, 3-0, shutout win over Pateadores LA G2005 (CA-S). The game was relatively quiet until the later portions of the game where Forza FC found their stride and began to apply pressure on Pateadores. The Forza FC attack would exploit the Pateadores defense with a flurry of goals in the second half. Sadie Beardall started the scoring in the 40th minute and then teammates Morgan OStrowski and Lily Hall each added a goal within the next eight minutes to extend the lead to 3-0. Forza held Pateadores off the scoreboard to seal the 3-0 victory.
15U Girls
04 Boise Thorns Elite (ID) took down 7 Elite Academy (UT), 2-0, to start off its Far West Regional Championship event with a full three points. Boise started the game off quickly, taking the lead in just the sixth minute of play with a goal from Kyndra Lyons. The Boise defense did it’s just to subdue the 7 Elite attack and Avery McBride extended Boise’s lead with a second half finish.
16U Boys
On the 16U Boys side, Hawaii Rush (HI) started off the Far West Regional Championships with a win versus JH United 2003 (WY). Hawaii Rush got off to a quick start with a shot on goal in the first minute and then tallied a goal in just the sixth minute with a finish from Connor Kong. After a scramble in the box in the 12th minute, Hawaii Rush was unable to put the ball into the back of the net to equalize. JH United leveled the score in the 46th minute thanks to Charles Hoelscher and go into halftime with a lead. Hawaii Rush got the game winner in the second half thanks to a Landon Chang goal and pick up three important points heading into Day 2.
17U Boys
Westside Timbers 02B Copa Red NLNC (OR) held on for a 1-0 win over La Roca Premier 02 (UT) in the 17U Boys age group. A large portion of the first half consisted of a struggle between the two teams vying for a position to create the first goal. Julien Buist-Thuillier of Westside Timbers would be the lone goal scorer of the match with a finish late in the first half. There would be multiple chances in the second half of the game but neither team would be able to finish the attack opportunities created thanks to stout defenses on both sides.
18U Girls
Hawaii Rush earned a, 3-0, shutout victory over SMUFC 01 (CA-S) to kick-off its event. Hawaii’s defense stymied the SMUFC attack throughout the game, but its own offense kick started the game with two early first half goals. Bree Fuller notched her first goal in just the sixth minute before adding a second in the 14th minute to give Hawaii a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Midway through the second half, Fuller completed her hat-trick finding the back of the net yet again. Hawaii held onto the 3-0 lead through the final whistle to earn a full three points from its first game.
19U Girls
SoCal Academy Chavez (CA-S) claimed a big victory against Washington Rush (WA) on the first day of preliminary play. The first half was dominated by the performance from SoCal’s Makenna Dominguez. Dominguez would score two quick back-to-back goals in the 13th minute and 14th minute of the game to start SoCal with a 2-0 lead. Washington Rush had an opportunity to strike in the 29th minute but was met with a save by the SoCal goalkeeper. SoCal Academy Chavez team would eventually add four more goals in the to finish the game from Summer Garrison, Madison Reeves, Sage Robledo and Caitlin Fong.
Regional winners of the 13U through 19U age groups earn a berth to the 2019 US Youth Soccer National Championships, which will be played July 22-28 at the Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kan.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the 13U through 19U Boys and Girls age groups, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the 14U through 19U Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of teams.
