US Youth Soccer National League 15U-19U Girls wrap up opening week of season

WILSON, N.C. — After four days of play, the US Youth Soccer National League 15U-19U Girls teams have solidified their spots in the standings until half of the field of teams meets again at the National League Winter Showcase in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

The competition within each age group has been very close, and multiple teams are still very much alive for every division title. The first place team’s lead is three points or less in 17 of the 18 divisions, and five divisions have ties at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, just nine teams came away with a win in each of their four games.

Despite holding just a two-point lead atop the 18U White Division, North Shore United 2002 Blue (WI) put together a very strong week in North Carolina. The Wisconsin side won all four of its games while conceding no goals. North Shore United coach Sinisa Angelovski said it took a full team effort to come away from this week set up well to compete for a division title when the team finishes its league season in Florida.

“It’s always tough when you play the top-level teams, and this the highest competition in the nation,” Angelovski said. “The great thing about the girls this year is that we had a lot of players scoring goals — not just forwards, but midfielders and also some defenders. From the defensive end, they did a great job. The entire team defended as a unit.”

The National League brings together some of the best teams in the country, all of which have had to earn their place in the league through success in US Youth Soccer’s top competitive programs. Player evaluation for college coaches is enhanced by the competitive level and importance of each game, as teams compete for a berth in the National Championships.

In a game that matched up two teams that entered Sunday tied atop the 16U Blue Division standings, CFC Redstar (GA) pulled away for a 4-0 win against Legends FC Riverside (CA-S). CFC coach Eric Steinhauser said his team talked about the importance of the game prior to kickoff, and the players knew they had the opportunity to move into first place in their continued pursuit of a division title and berth to Nationals.

“Last year, we were the Regional finalists, and we were State finalists. We’ve just been so close, and we’ve been knocking on the door for so long,” Steinhauser said. “We’ll go back to work when we get home and put everything we’ve got into going down to Florida and coming out of there with that opportunity [to go to Nationals].”

In addition to recruiting opportunities, National League teams compete for the National League title and one of four slots from each gender age group to the annual US Youth Soccer National Championships. Teams in the 14U-18U age groups are also competing for a chance to re-qualify for the National League’s 2020-21 season.

Following this National League Girls Fall Showcase event in North Carolina, the 15U-19U Boys teams will kick off their National League seasons with games Dec. 11-15 in Panama City Beach, Fla. The 14U Girls teams previously played their first four games of the season in Boca Raton, Fla., and the 14U Boys teams will play their first games Dec. 27-30 in Tampa, Fla.

Some notes from Sunday’s matches…

15U Girls

Ten of the 16 games on Sunday were decided by one goal or less.
Just one team in the age group — Broomfield Blast SC 05 Girls Prestige (CO) — recorded wins in each of its four games. Broomfield leads the Blue Division by four points.
TFA Elite 05 (OH-S) is the only team in the 15U Girls age group to have not conceded a goal in its first four games. TFA leads the White Division by two points thanks to three wins and a draw.
The Black Division and the Red Division each have ties atop the standings. Legends FC South 05 (CA-S) and Rio Rapids 05G (NM) each have nine points in the Black Division, while D’Feeters 05 Black (TX-N) and SC Wave Juniors 05 Girls (WI) each have 10 points in the Red Division.
Lauren Woodruff of D’Feeters 05 Black (TX-N) netted four goals on Sunday to move into second on the top scorers list. Tyler Coker of Rio Rapids 05G (NM) recorded a hat trick to move into a tie for third. Abigail Fitzsimmons of West Morris SC Premier 05 Red (NJ) also recorded a hat trick on Sunday for her first goals of the season. Taylor Gordon of SC Wave Juniors 05 Girls (WI) continues to lead the age group with seven goals.

16U Girls

Thirteen of 16 games on Sunday were decided by two goals or less, including eight draws.
FC Revolution Dynamo (PA-E) leads a tight Black Division after picking up two wins and two draws. Six other teams are within four points of the Eastern PA side.
SC Wave 04 Girls Blue (Juniors) (WI) is the lone 4-0-0 team in the age group, and it holds a 3-point lead atop the White Division standings.
Libertyville FC 1974 Elite (IL) has the largest goal differential in the age group at plus-12, and it leads the Red Division with 10 points.
Jordynn Dudley of GA Rush 2004G (GA) and Meghan Mrowicki of Libertyville FC 1974 Elite (IL) each have scored six goals to lead the age group.

17U Girls

Lou Fusz 03 Blue McKee/McVey (MO) finished the weekend with 21 goals scored – the most of any team. The Missouri side is 4-0-0 and is tied with Cleveland FC 03 Royal (OH-N) atop the White Division.
Jenna Lang of Indy Premier 03G Elite (IN) scored four goals in the team’s shutout win on Sunday. She leads the age group with 11 goals.
Peyton Gilmore of FC Copa Academy 03 NL Black (NJ) netted four goals on Sunday in her team’s 5-3 win.
Ten of 16 games on Sunday were decided by one goal or less.
San Diego Soccer Club Academy-Navy (CA-S) finished the weekend without a single loss while conceding only one goal – the least of any team in the age group.
Only three teams have won all four of their first matches – Impact MN (UT) of the Black Division, Lou Fusz 03 Blue – McKee/McVey (MO) and Cleveland FC 03 Royal (OH-N) of the White Division.

18U Girls

Eleven of the 16 games on Sunday were decided by two goals or less.
Defending National Champion Cleveland FC 02 (OH-N) leads the 18U Black Division with 10 points through four games.
Three teams have an unblemished record — Legends FC 02 Academy II (CA-S), Beadling 02G Showcase (PA-W) and North Shore United 2002 Blue (WI) — and they lead the Blue, Red and White Divisions, respectively.
Marissa Vasquez of Legends FC 02 Academy II (CA-S) netted a hat trick on Sunday and is now the age group’s top scorer with seven goals through four games.

19U Girls

Five of eight games on Sunday were decided by one goal or less, while three ended in a draw.
Just one 19U Girls team — 1776 United FC 01 Xtreme (PA-E) — went 4-0-0 on the weekend, and it leads the Black Division.
The Red Division contains three undefeated teams — La Roca PO (UT) and Dallas Texans Red (TX-N) are 3-0-1, and TFA Elite 01 (OH-S) is 2-0-2.
Caitlin Donovan of 1776 United FC 01 Xtreme (PA-E) scored in all four games, including a hat trick on Sunday to wrap up her week. She leads the age group with nine goals.
