The U.S. Women’s National Team has been eliminated from the 2016 Olympic Games with a loss in penalty kicks to Sweden following a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of regulation and extra time.

Box Score | Highlights

Sweden won the deciding penalty shootout 4-3, as star forward Alex Morgan‘s first PK shot was saved and Christen Press missed the frame entirely on her kick from the mark to account for the USA’s missed opportunities. Meanwhile, Sweden connected on four of its five shots, with Lisa Dahlkvist connecting on the game-sealing PK on Sweden’s fifth and final shot.

USA goalkeeper Hope Solo made a tough save on Sweden’s third shot to keep the shootout even at 2-2, then Morgan Brian and Sweden’s Caroline Seger each converted to extend the score to 3-3 after each side had taken four shots. Press airmailed the fifth and final shot for the USA, setting up Dahlkvist’s game-winner.

Lindsey Horan and Carli Lloyd converted the USA’s second and third shots respectively.

During the run of play, Morgan netted a 77th minute equalizer which pushed the match into extra time after Sweden had taken a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on a strike from Stina Blackstenius.

For the USA, the loss to Sweden and former coach Pia Sundhage is a historic one, as it marks the earliest exit the team has ever made in an Olympics or World Cup.
