USWNT routs Jamaica 4-0 in second match of 2021 Summer Series

HOUSTON – The U.S. Women’s National Team rolled past Jamaica 4-0 in its second match of the 2021 Summer Series.

The USA’s victory came on the strength of three first-half goals and a second-half stoppage time exclamation point and was sparked by the second-fastest tally in team history when Carli Lloyd netted just 23 seconds into the match. At 38 years and 332 days old, the goal saw Lloyd become the oldest-ever scorer for the USWNT. Lindsey Horan converted a penalty kick and Margaret Purce netted her second international goal before the break while Alex Morgan capped off the evening with a late tally.

The U.S. got off to an exceptionally speedy start as Rose Lavelle teed up Lloyd for her 125th career international goal mere seconds into the match. The goal puts Lloyd within five goals of Kristine Lilly (130 goals) for third place on the USWNT’s all-time scoring list. Lilly previously held the record as the oldest player to score a goal for the USA at 38 years, 264 days and remarkably, Lilly still holds the record as the youngest player to ever score for the USWNT.

The USA kept the pressure on after the early goal, threatening on the flanks and especially through Christen Press on the left wing. Press, in the midst of one of the most productive stretches of her career, continued to terrorize the defense. Just six minutes after Lloyd’s opener, she was brought down in the box to earn a penalty that Horan coolly finished to double the American advantage. Press provided again midway through the opening frame, sending a well-placed service into the box that Purce brought down in the penalty area before calmly rolling her shot into the net.

After becoming the 14th player in USWNT history with 100 combined goals and assists vs. Portugal on Thursday night, Press has now been directly involved with 32 goals in her last 34 games for the USWNT, scoring 13 goals and adding 19 assists.

While Jamaica was able to make a few forays into U.S. territory, the USWNT controlled nearly the entire match, outshooting the Reggae Girlz 15-2 and out-possessing them 72 percent-28 percent.

Though it took until stoppage time for the USWNT to add another goal, the team continued to create danger down the stretch. Press had several chances to add a goal of her own on the evening, while the USA’s attacking substitutions — Morgan, Kristie Mewis and Sophia Smith — all threatened in their own right. Morgan put a capper on things two minutes into stoppage time. Samantha Mewis chipped a pass to the forward, who squared and put a well-placed header on frame for the final U.S. goal of the evening

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

USA – Carli Lloyd (Rose Lavelle), 1st minute: Just 23 seconds from the opening whistle, Lindsey Horan and Lavelle had a nice exchange near the top right corner of the penalty box before Lavelle sent a ball in to Lloyd near the six-yard box. The veteran forward took a touch and then slotted it to the far post past Jamaica goalkeeper Sydney Schneider. USA 1, JAM 0

USA – Lindsey Horan (Penalty Kick), 7th minute: Dashing down the left flank to receive a long pass over the top, a Jamaica defender cut Press down by the legs as she entered the 18-yard box. The referee pointed to the spot and Horan stepped up for the penalty. Schneider dove to her left while Horan’s shot curved to the back of the net to double the U.S. lead early. USA 2, JAM 0

USA – Margaret Purce (Christen Press), 22nd minute: From 30 yards out on the left side, Press sent a soaring service to Purce who had plenty of space at the far post. The forward settled the ball as Schneider came out to make a play and a defender closed in, but she slotted it to the near post for her second career USWNT goal. USA 3, JAM 0

USA – Alex Morgan (Samantha Mewis), 90+2nd minute: On the break after a nice pass over the top, Mewis drove into the box on the right side and maintained possession as two Jamaica defenders closed in. She then chipped a pass to Morgan near the penalty spot and she put clinical header on goal. Schneider got her hands on the attempt, but the ball sailed into the right side-netting for the USA’s final goal of the evening. USA 4, JAM 0

  • Andonovski made six changes from the Starting XI that faced Portgual on Thursday night. Adrianna Franch replaced Alyssa Naeher in goal, Tierna Davidson and Emily Sonnett replaced Kelley O’Hara and Becky Sauerbrunn on defense, Catarina Macario replaced Samantha Mewis in the midfield while Carli Lloyd and Margaret Purce replaced Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe on the front line.

  • Midfielder Rose Lavelle is the only player to appear in every USWNT match since the team resumed play in November 2020.
  • Andi Sullivan made her first appearance for the USWNT since Jan. 31, 2020.
  • Alex Morgan’s goal was the 110th of her career and third as a mom. She needs 11 more to break the U.S. record held by Joy Fawcett for most international goals for the USWNT by a mom.
