USWNT to face Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti in 2022 Concacaf W Championship

CHICAGO – The U.S. Women’s National Team will face Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti in Group A at the 2022 Concacaf W Championship as eight teams begin a quest for this region’s four automatic berths to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be the first to feature 32 nations.

The groups and matchups were set during the Final Draw that was held this evening at the Concacaf HQ in Miami. Group B features Canada, Costa Rica, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago.

The overall schedule including the dates of the matchups, venues, kickoff times, ticket information and the broadcast schedule will be confirmed shortly.

The 2022 CWC, which will run from will run from July 4-18, will be played entirely in Monterrey, Mexico and the tournament’s 16 matches will be split across two stadiums — Estadio Universitario and Estadio BBVA, which is one of Mexico’s three venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Group stage matches will be played on July 4, 5, 7, 8 and 11. The Semifinals will take place on July 14 with the Third-Place Match and Championship Game will be held on July 18.

At the Final Draw, the eight countries were divided into two groups of four. The top two finishers in each group after round-robin play will advance to the semifinals while earning World Cup berths. The fifth and sixth place finishers will earn berths to the 10-team inter-confederation playoff tournament that will be held in February of 2023 to decide the final three berths to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The tournament winner will also get an automatic berth to the 2024 Olympics in Paris while the second and third place finishers will playoff in September of 2023 for Concacaf’s second and final Olympic berth. The tournament winner and the Olympic qualifier via the playoff series will also qualify directly to a new Concacaf competition, the 2024 W Gold Cup.

The United States and Canada earned automatic berths into the tournament while the other six teams advanced to the final competition by winning their qualifying groups over the February and April FIFA windows.

Additional Notes:

  • This will be the second Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament to be held in Mexico, with the 2010 tournament also being held there.
  • The United States won the first four CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying tournaments in which it competed (1991, 1994, 2002 and 2006) but fell to Mexico in the semifinal of the 2010 competition, which forced the USA to win the Third-Place match and then defeat Italy in a two-game playoff to earn a berth to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.
  • It remains the USA’s only loss in this qualifying tournament.
  • The USA won this competition in 2014, defeating Mexico 3-0 in the semifinal to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and then took down Costa Rica 6-0 in the title game.
  • In 2018, the USA also won this tournament, defeating Jamaica 6-0 in the semifinal to earn a berth to the 2019 Women’s World Cup before defeating Canada, 2-0, in the championship game.
  • The first four CONCACAF Women’s World Cup qualifying championship games in which the USA participated featured a USA vs. Canada match-up, but as host of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, Canada did not participate in the 2014 qualifying tournament. The teams did not meet in the 2011 tournament, when Canada won its only championship.
  • The USA has played Mexico in all seven previous Concacaf World Cup qualifying tournaments in which it has participated. As host, the USA did not participate in the qualifying tournament for the 1999 Women’s World Cup.
  • The USA has played Jamaica twice in World Cup qualifying, but the first time was in 1994. The most recent meeting in the semifinal in 2018.
  • The USWNT has faced Haiti three times in World Cup qualifying, but once was way back in 1991 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The teams also met in the World Cup qualifying tournaments in 2010 and 2014.
  • The USA is 32-1-0 all-time in Concacaf Women’s World Cup qualifying.
