VCU women’s soccer brings in 7 new Rams, including trio of in-state recruits

RICHMOND, Va. – Looking to build on a 2023 season that saw VCU Women’s Soccer take the eventual national runners up in No. 2 Stanford to the wire and a berth in the 2023 Atlantic 10 Tournament, head coach Lindsey Martin has announced the addition of seven newcomers as part of the Class of 2028.

“We are adding seven excellent people, students and soccer players to our program for 2024,” said Martin. “We covered all our bases positionally and believe that members of this class can become immediate contributors to our success.”

The class coach Martin has brought in consists of three forwards, two midfielders, one defender and one goalkeeper. Four stats are represented, with three incomers staying in their home state of Virginia.

Jazmin Bailey (Goalkeeper) – Harrington, Del., Lake Forest (Sporting Athletic Club)

Jazmin Bailey comes to VCU having earned an invite to the US National Team Youth Talent ID Camp back in 2020 and she spent her time playing club for Sporting Athletic Club.

Isabella Cobos (Forward) – Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne (Richmond United; Richmond Strikers)

Having earned First and Second Team All-Region honors and being named to the 2023 Virginia All-State Class 5 Top 15 Ranked Players list, Isabella Cobos comes to VCU ready to go. She was named the 2023 VHSL All-State Top 50 Players list and she helped her Princess Anne High School squad to the 2023 Regional Championship and a finish as the 2023 State Championship 4 Runners-Up.

Cobos also was part of a club squad that won the 2022 Jeff Cup Championship; 2023 regular season championship and the 2023 WAGS Championship. Four-year honor roll member and national Honors Society member, Cobos’ father, Steve Cobos, attended the Naval Academy and was crowned a National Champion in boxing. Cobos currently serves as a naval officer for the United States Navy.

Sarah Drooger (Midfielder) – Harrisonburg, Va., Eastern Mennonite (Skyline Elite Soccer Club)

A three-time First Team All-Blue Ridge Conference member and a three-time VISAA First Team All-State honoree, Sarah Drooger will look to play a role in the upcoming season. Named two-time Blue Ridge Conference Player of the Year and the 2023 Daily News Record All-Valley Offensive Player of the Year, Drooger was also listed on SoccerWire’s Players That Impress list and she was selected to the 2023 Summer Showcase Playoffs.

Drooger is a four-time honor roll member and was named to the National Honors Society.

Amelia Foore (Forward) – West Chester, Pa., Bayard Rustin (Penn Fusion)

A multi-sport athlete, running track at Bayard Rustin along with playing soccer, Amelia Foore was named the American Division MVP and earned All-State and All-Southeastern PA honors. She was also named to the All-State team by the PA Soccer Coaches Association.

Amelia Horton (Forward) – New Albany, Ohio, New Albany (Ohio Premier)

Amelia Horton brings to VCU a soccer pedigree, as her father played Division I soccer at Boston University and her brother, Philip Horton, played four years at Virginia and is a current member of Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati. A multi-sport athlete herself, running track at New Albany High School, Horton earned second-team All-ECNL Ohio Valley Conference honors.

Keira McCloskey (Midfielder) – Vienna, Va., James Madison HS (Fairfax Brave)

Another incoming Ram that comes from a strong soccer background, Keira McCloskey earned first team All-District and All-Region honors following her junior season at James Madison High School. McCloskey’s father and mother both played Division I soccer, with her father playing at West Virginia and her mother spending time at William & Mary.

A multi-sport athlete, McCloskey played basketball in high school and she earned second team ECNL All-Conference honors while on the pitch.

Kate Weyer (Defender) – Doylestown, Pa., Central Bucks West (FC Bucks; Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals GA)

Named All-South Eastern Pennsylvania, All-Area Top 40 Midfielder and first team All-Conference in 2023, Kate Weyer makes the move south of the Mason Dixon line as a threat to crack the VCU lineup. In four years at Central Bucks West, Weyer has helped her squad reach the playoffs and on the club side her teams have won the 2023 Champions Cup making appearances in the 2021-22 National Playoffs and the 2022 Champions League.

A four-time honor roll member, Weyer ran track in high school and her three siblings are current college athletes. Her brother swims and plays water polo at The Citadel, her sister plays soccer and runs track at Loyola Maryland and her other sister Meg plays field hockey and lacrosse at Vermont.
