WAGS teams resume league play after Columbus Day break

By Jimmy LaRoue

After a week away from league play in which many teams were still in action in Columbus Day tournaments, including the 37th Annual WAGS Rael Vodicka Memorial Tournament, the Washington Area Girls Soccer League resumes action this week with a full slate of games.

In Under-13 Division 1, VYS Patriots Black (5-1-1) and Freestate North Red (4-0-3) lead the pack, with VYS up by one point, though the next three teams behind them have played two fewer games.

VYS takes on 3-1-1 SYC Storm White (Sunday, 11 a.m., Oak Marr Park Field #2), while Freestate hosts Waldorf SC 99 Orange (1-5-0) at Allens Pond Complex Murtagh #1.

In U-14 Division 1, TSC SIAFU (5-1-0), who is up by two points over spring champions ASA Azzurri (4-0-1) but has played one extra game, takes on SAC Premier Blue (3-0-3) before next week’s showdown with ASA, which could very well decide the division. In the spring, TSC finished in fourth place at 3-5-1, but is much improved in the fall.

Herndon Freedom (5-0-1) is well ahead of the pack in U-15 Division 1, seven points ahead of second place FSC Xtreme (3-2-0), though Xtreme has played one fewer game. Herndon Freedom, who has outscored opponents 27-4, hosts 1-3-1 ODFC Revolution Sunday evening (7:30 p.m., Herndon HS Stadium Field).

In High School Division 1, Lee-Mount Vernon SC Patriots are 3-1-0 and lead Chantilly Revolution 95 by two points. LMVSC Patriots, who are in Virginia State Cup action Saturday, play its league match Sunday against 1-1-3 CYA Hotshots 95 (2 p.m., Poplar Tree Park #3).
