Girls champions crowned at 2014 Virginia Youth State Cup

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The 2014 Virginia State Cup was brought to a conclusion at the VYSA Virginia Soccer Training Center as teams came together in the Under-15s to Under-18s age groups to battle for the championship. In spite of the high winds, the teams played out some absorbing matchups that contained plenty of highlights.

As with all of our stories for this weekend’s competition, we attempted to predict results of the games using our partner website Report-a-Score.com’s analytical tools.

+ Editor’s Note: We are compiling a list of top performing players for additional story content and recognition. If you coached in State Cup or are a licensed coach/scout who watched games and have opinions on players, please submit up to two (2) players per team here by Tuesday, November 4 at noon.

We’ll have several more stories on specific games and related content from interviews with coaches and VYSA officials in the coming days, but for now, here’s a summary of results, and how reality on the field was far more important than any computer formula trying to pick winners.

Under-15s

Result:

FC Virginia United Premier 1-0 Herndon United

RaS Prediction:

FC Virginia 4, Herndon United 1

RaS had predicted a heavy win for FC Virginia over Herndon United in the final of the Under-15s girls competition, but it did not quite prove to be the case as Virginia squeaked by with a 1-0 win. The victors maintained their clean sheet streak throughout the tournament with the triumph, but Herndon can hold their heads high after a superb display in difficult conditions.

Under-16s

Result:

Loudoun 98 Red 4-3 (PKs) BRYC 98 Elite

RaS Prediction:

Loudoun 1, BRYC 1

The first game of the day saw Loudoun and BRYC go the distance in the Under-16s age category, as neither regulation time nor overtime could separate the two teams. In the end, penalties were required, and Loudoun triumphed after a very even game between two closely matched sides.

Under-17s

Result:

VSA Heat 97 West 0-1 McLean Green

RaS Prediction:

VSA Heat 3, McLean 1

McLean were not expected by RaS to take victory in their Under-17s final against VSA, but they did so by a one-goal margin after a tight clash between two of the top eight seeds. However, No. 7 McLean prevailed, and will take home a state championship.

Under-18s

Result:

PWSI Courage 96 1-2 McLean Green

RaS Prediction:

McLean 2, PWSI 1

An age group above, McLean’s Under-18s also will travel home with a state championship as they defeated PWSI 2-1. The final saw McLean concede a goal for the first time in the tournament, but they were not to be denied victory. It was also a result and scoreline correctly predicted by RaS.
