Boston College standout Sam Coffey transfers to Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Via Penn State University) – Head coach Erica Dambach is excited to announce that Sam Coffey has transferred to the Penn State women’s soccer program. Coffey will enroll in classes in January and will have two seasons of eligibility left beginning in 2019.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sam to our Penn State women’s soccer family,” Dambach said. “She has a tremendous work ethic and, through her two years at Boston College, she has already established herself as one of the best players in the country. We’re looking forward to adding her to our already talented roster for the 2019 season.”
Coffey is a forward/midfielder from Sleepy Hollow, New York, and spent the past two seasons with the Boston College Eagles. With Boston College, Coffey tallied 58 points on 17 goals and 24 assists in 40 matches.
“Not only is Penn State an athletic powerhouse, but it has such a great balance of academics,” Coffey said. “I fell in love with the beautiful campus and the atmosphere of State College. I connected very well with the coaches and players — it all just felt right. As soon as I got here, I felt like I was already home. I can’t wait to be a part of something really special here.”

For her success on the field, Coffey has garnered numerous awards. In 2017, she was named to the All-ACC Third Team and the All-ACC Freshman Team. This past season, Coffey received First Team All-America honors, All-ACC First Team plaudits, was named the ACC Midfielder of the Year and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
Coffey has also seen time with the U.S. Women’s National Team program at the U-18, U-19 and U-20 levels. Most recently, she took part in a 10-day training camp with the U.S. U-20 WNT this past May.
The 2019 Penn State women’s soccer roster will feature 18 returners from the 2018 campaign. Penn State is slated to return its top three goal scorers, two starters from its backline that helped record 14 shutouts in 25 matches, and two-year starting goalkeeper Amanda Dennis for the 2019 season.
