CHICAGO (Via Gatorade) — In its 30th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade has announced Kristina Diana of South County High School as its 2014-15 Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

Diana is the first Gatorade Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from South County High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Diana as Virginia’s best high school girls soccer player.

The 5-foot-6 senior midfielder had led the Stallions to an 8-1-4 record and a berth in the Patriot Conference Tournament semifinals at the time of her selection. Diana scored 11 goals and passed for five assists through 13 games. She was a 2014 First Team All-Patriot Conference honoree and a 2014 Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention selection.

Diana has maintained a 3.84 GPA in the classroom. A member of the South County National Honor Society, she has volunteered locally as part of multiple community-service activities on behalf of her church.

“Kristina Diana is a box-to-box midfielder and beyond,” said JT Alukonis, head coach of West Springfield High. “She’s physical, plays fast and quick and shows a high level of passing in both short and long situations. We made our goal for the game to stop Kristina and we failed to do so from the start.”

Diana has signed a National Letter of Intent to play soccer on an athletic scholarship at Virginia Tech beginning this fall.
