OMG! What a basketball-shot header by Brandon McDonald
This special edition of OMG! What a Goal! looks at D.C. United's perfectly placed "basketball shot" of a goal last week by defender Brandon McDonald in D.C.'s convincing win over Chicago. It's the kind of goal ESPN Sports Center almost never carries in their highlights because it's not spectacular to the average fan. But for those who have played the game, goals like this are simply jaw dropping and worthy of just as much praise as a 30-yard blast the actually requires far less skill beyond making great contact with the laces.
Coach as First Responder: The Trouble with Niggles
By Dr. Wendy Lebolt As coaches we are not meant to be sports medicine experts and we shouldn’t overstep our credentials. But, let’s face it; we’re our athletes’ first responders. When they go down on the field, the referee signals for us to come on and check out their condition. This is a unique privilege – just ask any parent who has been prevented from coming on to attend to their injured warrior. As parents, we’re inclined to rescue. As coaches, we have to weigh our options. As we run onto the field, the play we just saw is running through our minds. What happened? How did they get hurt? Did she get clipped from behind? Did he turn his ankle? Did her knee buckle? Was there a collision of heads? Of course, we are also picturing the particulars about this kid, thumbing through our mental file cabinet sorted by nickname and jersey number. Are they quick to tears? Do they shake stuff off easily? Will they insist on staying in the game no matter what? When we reach them, we survey the scene. How they are lying, what they are bending or holding onto or rubbing. Or, heaven forbid, if they are not moving. Then we have to decide what to do next. This is my approach to triage.
Pennsylvania girls’ high school soccer switching to fall season
This fall in Pennsylvania, girls high school soccer will make the switch from a spring to a fall season. The issue has complicated life for coaches and athletic directors, according to the Lehigh Valley Express-Times, at the state's high schools, especially when it comes to finding the space for their teams to practice and play. The other issues include trying to schedule games in a packed calendar and finding the buses to transport them. The challenge has also been extended to finding enough referees for the games, the paper reports. In the past, only boys teams played in the fall in the state. Now, the same number of referees will be available for both boys and girls, as well as college soccer games, which also play a fall season.
