Chapter 56: THE BIG NO-NO – ROOKIE: Surviving Your Freshman Year of College Soccer

Strikers Logo

Your teammates are going to have boyfriends or girlfriends and some of those significant others are going to be significantly good-looking. I’m sure you know where I’m heading with this and believe me, this is a line that you don’t want to cross.

I don’t care how good-looking that person is and I don’t care how much your heart yearns for him or her, stay the heck away! Show me a college team in turmoil and I’ll show you a love triangle because one teammate couldn’t stay away from another teammate’s boyfriend/girlfriend.

When one of these situations arises, it fractures the team because the other players are backed into taking sides. When the lines are drawn and sides are chosen, you’ve got feuding, in-fighting and a chemical disaster, and the healing can literally take years. You’ll lose friends and gain enemies and a day or two later you’ll realize what an enormous mistake you’ve made and how you’d give up a limb to turn back the clock and make a better decision. This is one of those topics where you can believe me now or believe me later, but eventually you will believe me.

Very few of life’s issues are as clear cut, black and white as this one. When I say that your teammate’s significant others are off limits, I mean 100%, lookie-no-touchy, turn and walk the other way, no questions asked, OFF LIMITS!
